State of Hawaii Presents NASBLA with Unique Gift September 10, 2010

Prior to the beginning of the NASBLA Executive Board Meeting, Ed Underwood, Boating Law Administrator for the State of Hawaii made a special presentation to the association.

Ed, on behalf of the State of Hawaii and the Department of Land and Natural resources, presented John Johnson and Terry West with a unique gift commemorating our 50th Anniversary celebration.

The display was designed specifically to commemorate the 2010 NASBLA Conference in Hawaii and is framed with a native hardwood called Koa, a prized, indigenous hardwood that the early Polynesians used to build their voyaging canoes. Guided by skilled navigators reading the stars, winds and ocean currents, these vessels traversed thousands of miles of uncharted ocean and were used to populate the far reaches of the South Pacific. In modern times, they have come to symbolize the quest for new horizons, unexplored territory, knowledge and adventure.

Incorporated into the display is a Kukui nut lei, a symbol of nobility to native Hawaiians. The leaves and branches of its parent tree, shown in the background of the panel, were used for healing. Rich oil extracted from the meaty, edible nut was often used to finish canoe hulls and protect the wood from the elements. The Kukui has long been a source of medicine, food and light in Hawaiian culture. Once ignited, the flesh of its oily nut burned slowly like the wick of a candle, lighting the darkness for the ancients. Because of its importance to the early settlers of Hawaii and its association with illumination and enlightenment, the Kukui serves as Hawaii’s State Tree.

The Executive Board on behalf of the entire association was deeply honored and moved by the ceremony and presentation of the display, which will hold a place of honor in NASBLA’s Headquarters in Lexington, KY.

NASBLA is pleased to announce that Janine Driver, author of “You Say More Than You Think,” will be giving her presentation How to Use “The New Body Language” to Get What You Want on September 13th at the Annual Conference.

Uncovering the mysteries of body language—how people communicate their thoughts and feelings without saying a word—is a powerful first step toward mastering any business and social situation. All successful people know that the ability to detect and react to the split-second signals that skim across people’s bodies hundreds of times each day is crucial to getting what they want in life. When something they are doing isn’t effective, they have learned how to adjust their actions to maximize the moment.

Janine Driver, President of the Body Language Institute, NBC’s Today Show Body Language Contributor and New York Times Bestselling Author will teach our attendees how to have the control and be able to change the dynamics of any interaction according to their own needs and desires. Janine will discuss what she calls everyone’s secret weapon—confidence borne of intuitive body language—that all successful people share. With our vamped-up confidence and enthusiasm, Janine also states that we will save time, money, resources, and that all-important edge in an often-challenging global environment.

JANINE DRIVER is the founder, president, and lead instructor of the Body Language Institute in Alexandria, VA, an elite certification program that offers award-winning advanced communications training that help executives, sales people, law enforcement and other professionals build executive presence, explode their selling skills, and create and deliver business presentations that win new business. Janine and her team of the world’s most sought after subject matter experts have helped clients become the total leader, which ultimately led them to win billions of dollars in new business contracts.

The NASBLA Annual Conference, as well as many other programs and events throughout the year, simply could not be done without the generous support of our sponsors. This is particularly true for our Mission and Strategic Partners.

The NASBLA Mission Partner, Boat Ed, is an important member of the boating safety family. Their generous support not only allows us to bring strong and dynamic programming to both the BLA workshop and the annual conference, but their support also launched and runs the innovations in technology program.

The Innovations in Technology Initiative leverages the latest technology to help the states and territories make boating safer and more enjoyable, and make the most efficient use of scarce state resources. By identifying, investigating and publicizing technological applications that demonstrate the greatest promise in achieving our RBS objectives, NASBLA and its ITI partners bring the proven results of emerging technologies to the tough issues facing boating safety, enforcement, education and administration.

Paul Donheffner (center), boating law administrator for Oregon, accepts the Innovations in Technology Award on behalf of the Oregan State Marine Board. Presenting the award are Kurt and Cindy Kalkomey on behalf of NASBLA Mission Partner Boat Ed.

The Innovations in Technology Award is presented annually to the program or initiative that demonstrates the highest level of innovation leading to advances in boating safety.  States or other government agencies, corporations or public-private partnerships can submit their program or innovation by submitting an award nomination form. In 2009, this prestigious award was presented to the Oregon State Marine Board.

Boat Ed is a private organization dedicated to providing boater safety courses and certification and publishing boater education materials. Boat Ed works directly with the state government agencies responsible for boater safety education to develop home-study courses, such as the online and video boating safety courses found on this site.

Each of Boat Ed’s courses is the official online boating safety course for the state government agency responsible for boating.

Boat Ed is the official and exclusive provider of print and video boating safety courses for more than 45 states. And, Boat Ed is the only boating safety course provider that develops print materials on behalf of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the United States Power Squadrons.

NASBLA is proud of our relationship with Boat Ed and deeply appreciative of their support of our association and member states.

Be sure to visit with Boat Ed in the Exhibitor area at the NASBLA Annual Conference.

Peter Bishop – A Look Into the Future September 5, 2010

One of the keynote speakers at the 2010 NASBLA Annual Conference will provide attendees with a sneak peak into the future.

Dr. Peter Bishop is an associate professor of Strategic Foresight and director of the graduate program in Futures Studies at the University of Houston. He specializes in techniques for long-term forecasting. Using techniques and practices laid out in his book, Thinking about the Future: Guidelines for Strategic Foresight, Dr. Bishop helps organizations and governments around the world forecast and better plan for future developments.

Dr. Bishop’s impressive client list includes IBM, the NASA Johnson Space Center, Nestle USA, Tetra Pak, the Shell Pipeline Corporation, the Defense and Central Intelligence Agencies, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Texas Department of Transportation, the California Environmental Protection Agency, and the Center for Houston’s Future.

He is also a founding board member of the Association of Professional Futurists, an organization that promotes futurists as valuable professionals through networking, conferences, and other activities involving its members.

As NASBLA celebrates its 50th year, many will be looking back at 1960 to see what was going on when the Association was born. The founders also had an image of the future back then, but that image was different from what we have today and, more importantly, different from what actually happened to them. Nevertheless, the Association has survived and thrived in that world of accelerating change, and the next 50 years promises to be just as exciting if not more so. Dr. Peter Bishop will review the forces that are shaping the future today and what some of the surprises might be for the Association by 2060.

Please plan on joining us for this important session on Monday, September 13 at 7:00 AM in the Kauai Ballroom.

As with all of our most important sessions, a complete review will be posted online for those unable to attend in person.
